I’m so excited. In just a few days we’ll be boarding the plane for two weeks on the seaside visiting family. I’d love to spend some time every day sketching but I’m aware that it may not happen. Anyways, preparing and getting my supplies ready is almost as fun as sketching itself. I know I love reading about everyone’s travel kits. If you’re like me and are curious, here’s what I’m taking with me:

  • 2 LAMY Safari pens with waterproof ink (black and brown)

  • 1 LAMY Safari fountain pen with non-waterproof ink (black)
  • 1 Platinum Carbon Ink Pen (black, waterproof)
  • 1 Pentel Brush Pen (black)
  • Watercolors – I used my Schmincke Akademie Palette as a base and just added some of my favorite Winsor & Newton colors. Actually I would now choose different colors, but was a bit pressed for time so just left it as it was:

222 Light Yellow Lemon (PY3, Schmincke Akademie)

225 Indian Yellow (PY110 PY154, Schmincke Akademie)

332 Cadmium Red Hue (PR255, Schmincke Akademie)

333 Carmine (PR255, Schmincke Akademie)

443 Ultramarine (PB29, Schmincke Akademie)

545 Quinacridone Magenta (PR122, Winsor & Newton Professional)

379 Manganese Blue Hue (PB15, Winsor & Newton Professional)

733 Winsor Violet (Dioxazine) (PV23, Winsor & Newton Professional)
502 Permanent Rose (PV19, Winsor & Newton Cotman)
547 Quinacridone Gold (PR206,PV19,PY150, Winsor & Newton Professional)
76 Burnt Umber (PBr7, PY42, Winsor & Newton Cotman)
599 Sap Green (PY139, PG36, PR101, Winsor & Newton Cotman)
465 Paynes Gray (PBk7, PB29, PB15, Winsor & Newton Cotman)
445 Prussian Blue (PB27, Schmincke Akademie)

551 Brilliant Green (PG7, Schmincke Akademie)

553 Permanent Green (PO62 PG7, Schmincke Akademie)

660 Yellow Ochre (PY42, Schmincke Akademie)

666 English Red (PR101, Schmincke Akademie)

665 Sepia (PB15:1 PBr7 PBk6, Schmincke Akademie)

782 Black (PBk6, Schmincke Akademie)

  • 2 Moleskine Watercolor Notebooks (A5 and pocket)
  • 3 Washi tapes
  • Pentel waterbrushes (three sizes)
  • Rosemary & Co Travel Brush No8 (I just love this brush, it’s so soft)
  • Mechanical pencil, which is practical as it doesn’t need sharpening
  • Art Book – I was wondering if I should take”Sketching from Square One… to Trafalgar Square” by Richard E. Scott or “Paint Yourself Calm” by Jean Haines. Decided on the latter as I haven’t received the Copic Markers I ordered to use for the former. Also, trying loose painting sounded like a good thing when on holidays.
  • Art Course – You, Me, and the Sea – online course by Alisa Burke (on my iPad). Should give me some additional inspiration while by the sea.
  • White Sharpie pen (water based)
  • Kneaded eraser
  • 7 Zig Brushables Markers – I also have Tombow markers but decided to get the Brushables instead. They are a bit more versatile because they have a darker and lighter color on the opposite end of the same marker. The colors I chose are Kiwi, Pure Yellow, Pure Red, Pure Pink, Lunar Lavender, Pure Blue and Platinum.

It all fits in two relatively small pouches.

One is my “writing pouch”, where I have all my pens and markers and my Leuchtturm1917 notebook/diary.

The other pouch holds my watercolors, brushes and Moleskine pocket watercolor notebook.

I love the flexibility this system gives me – I can easily take my art supplies in and out of my handbag as needed. A big bonus is that I’ve never had problems when going through airport security. I actually carry the two pouches even in my normal everyday. It’s rather rare that I’ll have time to take out my watercolors, but I may have a minute or two to just practice my brush lettering or to use some color when I write in my Leuchtturm notebook.

Do you sketch when you travel and if yes, what art supplies do you take with you?
