Inktober was started in 2009 by Jake Parker as a means to improve his inking skills and develop a daily drawing habit. I think I heard about it for the first time last year but doing it myself didn’t cross my mind. This year I decided to take on the challenge as well and practice my drawing skill while reading Alphonso Dunn’s book Pen and Ink Drawing. This was also a good excuse to add two more ink bottles to my small collection – Rohner & Klinger’s Scabiosa and Viridian Green (Smaragd grün). I love the colors and the price here in Switzerland is really affordable, only 6 CHF for a 50 ml bottle.
I was already doing some really quick and small sketches by the end of September, so my first sketches for Inktober were mostly just random things I thought about on that day. Then I came to the idea to really challenge myself and try some drawings from Alphonso Dunn’s book. I really have to push myself and do need a bit more time than before. I have to say I now have a new appreciation for the pen and ink drawings (without wash).
I’ve been really busy at work but will give my best to stick to the challenge of drawing from Alphonso Dunn’s book. I’m curious how my drawings will change as a result. I’d also love to do some people sketching. I have Suhita Shirodkar’s course on Craftsy and Lynne Chapman’s book so am very tempted… In a dream world I’d have many hours a day to draw, paint, read art books and watch art courses. 🙂
