I Started Knitting Again

Recently, for the first time since my childhood, I started knitting again. My husband finds that funny and a hobby for "grannies". Little does he know how "in" knitting is. 🙂

It must have been something I watched on YouTube. Someone mentioned it in a video and I got reminded about my childhood.

I learned to knit as a kid from my grandmother. She and my great-grandmother used to knit socks, pullovers, cardigans, hats, and gloves for us children. I especially remember the socks. Those were the warmest socks ever, perfect for the cold snowy winters. Back then some clothes were either not available or too expensive. My mother did knit too, but somewhat less as she was busy working and taking care of my sister and me.

My skills were not so advanced, but I was able to knit a few improvised pieces for my dolls. Then I lost interest and forgot about knitting. When I was growing up, it was much cooler to buy your clothes, as not everyone could afford to do that.

Nowadays DIY, hand-made, and self-made are all the rage. It is funny how things have changed. Doing stuff with our own hands is much rarer and much more cherished.

As is typical for me I ordered knitting needles and garn straight away. When I get an idea I have to make it happen right at that moment.

At first, I considered doing a proper knitting project - a scarf, or maybe a beanie. Eventually I decided to knit without an end goal in mind as I wouldn't have the time.

I may end up knitting something proper one day, but for now, I’m enjoying the stress and pressure-free knitting. I was a bit surprised, but after all these years, my hands still knew how to do it. I wouldn't have been able to explain it, but my hands just knew. I’d make some tea, or cappuccino, watch youtube videos (my guilty pleasure) and knit away. There’s something nostalgic and calming about it for me, and I always think about my dear grandmother when I knit.
