I recently finished this portrait in oil of my nephew. It took me a few months to finish it, though, and I almost gave up halfway through.
The photo I chose as a reference is an amazing photo, but a very difficult reference to work from. I had almost decided I won't be able to pull it off, and should write it off as a learning experience.
So I let the painting sit unfinished for many weeks.
Then I had a very inspiring conversation with my mentor, and she gave me some pointers on how I could improve my work. Having someone to talk we about my doubts and challenges has been immensely helpful. After our call, I was hopeful and inspired again. With renewed enthusiasm, I got back to my easel, and this time was able to finish the portrait. I know there are many things I could have done better, but I'm happy with how the portrait turned out.
Lesson learned, though - I will be much more careful choosing my references from now on.
The more I paint, the more I see how much I still have to learn. I can choose to despair and give up, or I can paint some more.
So I paint more.
To make my life a bit easier, I did get some amazing reference packs recently and can not wait to get painting. Also, I want to do another portrait of my daughter, wearing a beautiful dress we bought. My aim is to paint her at least once every year, as this will be a great memory piece for her.

If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
